Just how bad is Ted Strickland's fundraising situation?

Last week 3BP gave a rundown of John Kasich's buttwhoopin' of Ted Strickland on the fundraising front.

Well, after getting a closer look at Strickland's report, it looks like the situation is actually quite a bit worse for the Governor than initially discussed.

While financial reports were supposed to include contributions from 7/1/09-12/31/09, state campaigns are given the flexibility to include contributions in their report up until the filing deadline. In this case, that was 1/29/10.

In other words, campaigns can essentially include an extra month in their contribution report, if they so choose.

In this case, Strickland did include the extra month and Kasich did not.

So, how much did Strickland raise in his extra month? $1.44 million dollars.

That means Strickland raised a grand total of only $1.18 million from July-December. That's just $196,666/month, or only 48k more per month than Rep. Pat Tiberi raised in the 4th quarter for his 12th congressional district seat.

For comparison, Kasich raised $4.55 million during the same 6 month period, or nearly four times as much as the Governor.

It gets even worse for Jello Ted.

Of the $2.62M raised in the 7 months, $630,748, or nearly 25%, of his total contributions came from State or County Democratic Party organizations. To be fair, Kasich received 200k from State/County Party orgs, but those contributions account for only 4% of his total raised.

Now, Strickland's people can make whatever excuses they like for these disturbingly bad numbers, but facts are facts - Ted Strickland vastly underperformed.

Once again, I'm happy to consent that Strickland maintains a $2.1M lead in cash-on-hand, as he should as sitting Governor. And as an incumbent Governor, he shouldn't have any trouble maintaining that advantage.

That is, unless he performs this badly again.

  1. Glad you are pointing this out. The Dispatch sort of implied this but did not go into as much detail. Your final point about TEDs 2.1 million edge is not really true bc we have to assume JK raised at least say $700,000 in Jan. and spent say $2-300,000. We can assume his real edge was more like $1.6-1.7 million.
    Thanks for posting it!
