Barack Obama tries, and fails, to deny the insult he delivered to small businesses

Maybe Barack Obama took a clue from Sherrod Brown, who famously denied comparing Republicans to Hitler and Stalin, after he made a speech on the Senate floor comparing Republicans to Hitler and Stalin.

After his now infamous declaration to small business owners that government that "You didn't build that! Somebody else made that happen!", he came out with this ad, trying to tell people that what he REALLY said is that we've got to stand behind business owners. Yes, really.

Is he serious!? Does he think this ad is going to work?

I bet that it has the opposite effect. People know what he said. He was not telling business owners that we need to "stand behind them." What an absolute lie. He was telling business owners, "Hey! You OWE us."

American Crossroads isn't letting him get away with it. Check out their new video ridiculing him for trying to deny what he said.

"Barack Obama drops the ball on his own 1-yard line."

That's gold.

  1. He dropped the ball at the one yard line and the media all reported he scored a touchdown.

  3. Romney: "I know that you recognize a lot of people help you in a business. Perhaps the banks, the investors. There’s no question your mom and dad, your school teachers, the people that provide roads, the fire, the police. A lot of people help. But let me ask you this, did you build your business? If you did, raise your hand. Take that, Mr. President."

Obama: "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires."

There isn't enough difference there to slip Mitt's released tax returns under.

Fumbled on the 1 yard line indeed. Almost every single businessman trotted out to try to hammer this home was shown to get some kind of government assistance - above and beyond any public workers referenced by Romney above.

You guys really are bad at this. Where's Keeling?

Read this again and maybe try mouthing the words as you do: "The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

  4. Dear Plunderpal,

I'm sure Jon would be touched by your repeated wishing that he were still at 3BP.

As much as you Obots want to rewrite what he said, it isn't going to work. He said somebody else made that happen.

And he is a liar about the internet. It was most certainly NOT created so that all companies could make money. It was created as a tool for the Defense Department. Like many other military technologies, it eventually found use in the civilian market. But don't pretend that the government had this great idea to boost the economy called the internet. That's just a lie.

Obama basically told business owners "you OWE us because we made your business happen, not you."

Nice try, but this one is pretty indefensible. (Kinda like "our plan worked". Stop wasting your time.

    1. Just because you refuse to see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. why not just read and stop lying about what you think "he basically said". What he ACTUALLY said is a matter of record and it has nothing to do with "you owe us" or any such nonsense. Seriously, you are bad at this.

At least Keeling was somewhat sporting.

    2. Wait, I thought we were all Keeling's alter egos?

Are the plunder-pals getting their talking points mixed up again?

    3. ...and no he's not lying about the Internet. If we don't fund DARPA with TAX DOLLARS we don't end up with an Internet. Nobody is claiming that the government meant to create Amazon when it devised the technologies. It doesn't matter. The point - that you keep missing - is it takes both public and private investment in technologies and infrastructure to make business go. Obama gets it. Romney gets it. Why can't you?

I know it's fun to take a sound bite out of context and run with it. You're an O'Keefe/Veritas fan. I get that. It doesn't lessen the fact that in the real world the truth is nobody is successful on an island. Romney even echoed his again at the Olympics.

You should quit while you're losing.

    4. An Obot thinks my criticisms of Obama's gaffes are "bad" and that I am "losing".

I'm shocked, and oh so distressed about it.

    5. is that a white flag i see? your criticisms aren't "bad" nick. just wrong. and you are losing - badly.

appears my work is done here. ;-)

    6. Thats a nice try.

People know what zero said. If I was wrong, than he would be suffering no damage from his idiot comments. Instead, he is scrambling so badly to cover that he released an ad to defend himself, where he lied about what he said.

    7. Uh, Nick. Seriously. You need a cranial rectal extraction here bro. He's only scrambling in the sense that the misleading ads are having an affect on the Fox News mouth breathers who can't think for themselves let alone do some quick research to find all the facts.

PolitiFact. You've cited them before I believe.

      "Our ruling

In speeches and videos, the Romney campaign has repeatedly distorted Obama's words. By plucking two sentences out of context, Romney twists the president's remarks and ignores their real meaning.

The preceding sentences make clear that Obama was talking about the importance of government-provided infrastructure and education to the success of private businesses.

Romney also conveniently ignores Obama's clear summary of his message, that "the point is ... that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

By leaving out the "individual initiative" reference, Romney and his supporters have misled viewers and given a false impression. For that, we rate the claim False."

    9. You don't get it Eric. You can use the Elizabeth Warren argumnet all you want, but it doesn't fly here or with most business owners.

The context of his statements make it look WORSE. He claims that no business can be successful without government.

Nobody argues that we dont all pay for roads and schools. But those things don't build businesses.

My father started his own business. The notion that his teachers deserve some sort of credit for that business being successful is ludricrous.

Did they do their jobs well? Of course.

But they contributed nothing to my dads business. Zero. They didn't come up with the idea. They didn't put forward any money. They didn't take any risks. They didn't manage it day to day.

      It was an insult.

He didn't need the government to build it.

HE built it. NOBODY else made it happen.

      Most small business owners agree.

  5. haha. trust us. nobody thinks you guys are Jon anymore! that much is pretty clear.

  6. a minute of context that STILL leaves out the operative part of the speech. love the first comment on the video:

"Funny thing is, immediately after this, he said, "The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together." How about adding the part where he states the real point of his speech, that government investment in research and infrastructure lays the groundwork for entrepreneurship and capitalistic initiative? Not a novel idea, and everyone from Clinton to Reagan to Romney agrees with me."

Nick. You just keep digging a deeper hole here. You're making stuff up on the fly. "He claims that no business can be successful without government"?? Really? No reasonable reading of his speech would come to this conclusion. I find it funny though that most of those businesses Romney trotted out have some kind of benefit from government.

Really? Your father didn't benefit from education that he received? THAT, my friend is a ludicrous notion. He's in no position to succeed in business without good teachers and role models. I am a business owner going on a decade and can tell you without hesitation I credit all my teachers (many of them on a government funded military base) for influencing me in a positive way. As referenced before on Twitter, I also credit the investments we made in DARPA that gave us packet switching and my ability to have an online business. I don't for a minute feel arrogant enough to claim I did it completely and entirely on my own. What business is your dad in?

I think we've struck upon the crux of this issue. Conservatives like yourself feel that what government does and what we accomplish as a collective is nice but pales in comparison to the individual. Liberals like myself feel that the collective is at least as important as the individual. This may be what this campaign hinges on and the American people will decide what direction we go in.

I'd hope that most Americans - and small business owners - aren't so arrogant to think that they got to where they are completely on their own.

That's exactly the difference of opinion here. Its the difference between right and left. And its the reason you are wrong. :-)

"He claims that no business can be successful without government"?? Really? No reasonable reading of his speech would come to this conclusion.

YOU. DIDNT. BUILD. THAT. SOMEBODY. ELSE. MADE. THAT. HAPPEN.

    Case closed. Goodnight, Eric.

    1. Repeating the one line over and over again doesn't do anything to prove its context, which countless fact checkers have ruled do not support the interpretation you're desparately trying to put on it.

  8. Agreed. So long as you plug your ears and go "la la la la can't hear you!" for the rest of the speech. LOL Goodnight.

  9. Well PolitiFact has ruled that your claim is false, and the people of Ohio clearly aren't buying it given today's Quinny poll.

But it's always nice to hear from the pro-higher taxes Kasich cheerleading squad.
