We're back in business.

I'm sure Lisa-Patt McDaniel is a nice person.

As Strickland's last Director of the Department of Development, the lifelong bureaucrat wasn't exactly the most qualified person to understand what businesses need to thrive in Ohio.

Well, John Kasich has decided to go the opposite direction of Strickland and bring on someone who has made one helluva living creating businesses all over the world.

In a move of enormous proportions, billionaire venture capitalist Mark Kvamme is Kasich's new Director of Jobs Ohio, the Kasich effort to streamline the Department of Development in an effort for them to better understand how to bring jobs to the Buckeye State.

Here is Kvamme's bio from his current firm:
Mark works with enterprise data management software, consumer media and advertising services companies. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital in 1999, Mark was Chairman and CEO of CKS Group, an advertising agency that pioneered new advertising strategies by integrating marketing with technology. Earlier in his career Mark was a Director of International Marketing for Wyse Technology, the President and CEO of International Solutions, and was a founding member of Apple France. Mark has a BA in French Economics and Literature from the University of California at Berkeley.
Compare that to Patt-McDaniel's working history as an employee of the state of Ohio for her entire career.

With Ohio still in a major jobs crisis, Kvamme is intensely more qualified and with a salary of 1$, about 1,425% cheaper than Strickland's Director.

Make no mistake, Ohio's 9.8% unemployment rate is 81% higher than when Strickland came into office. In the most recent report, Ohio's labor force shrunk by 20,000 people and has shrunk by 50,000 in the past year.

It will be Kvamme's job to bring those people back to Ohio and into our job market. He'll do that by helping Ohio create a business environment that encourages businesses to give the Buckeye State a shot.

Ohio. We're back in business.

  1. Businesses will never come here without a 39 MPH train. King John has already destroyed Ohio before he even takes office. Ha.

  2. It certainly diesn't look too good for Ohio..

  3. What? No mention that he's not MOVING TO OHIO?

What happened to "you have to spend money to get good people here?" If we're getting what we pay for when the special aide MUST make more than the governor himself, what does it say when this guy's making $1? (I get the symbolism, but do you get my point?).

All we heard was 400K out of work, 400K out of work...but Kasich's outsourced another position? And they guy's not even moving to OHIO?

But he's not even sworn in yet, right? So we can't judge good or bad anything he does right?

    SMH.

Once more, if Strickland had pulled something like this, or better yet, a Democratic governor in the current economic state such as Cuomo, what would be your response? Think hard before you chide me for my outrage. Because if you'd be anything less than outraged you're not being genuine.

  4. I can't think hard, I'm laughing too hard at you and your phony outrage. Strickland has a 4 year record. Kasich has nothing to judge by yet. You don't care what happens, you'll find something to jump up and down and scream like a monkey about.

So you'd be satisfied if Kvamme moved to Ohio (at State expense) and collected a $140K salary then?

I'd be careful if I were you -- some (oh not me of course) might start to think that you sound like a closed-minded ideologue and/or political tool with no credibility!

  6. "Scream like a monkey"

    Nice.

I asked 4 legitimate questions and there's yet to be an answer. I'd rather someone who is going to development businesses in Ohio actually do it while in Ohio.

    Why is that so funny?

"Kasich has nothing to judge by yet."

But it's nothing but celebration here? Nothing but praise?

I don't get it. Either you can judge, good or bad, what the governor-elect is doing before he is sworn in or you can't. It's ridiculous to say that we can't criticize because he's not the actual governor yet while you and other praise him.

"So you'd be satisfied if Kvamme moved to Ohio (at State expense) and collected a $140K salary then?"

Fargo, heed your own advice about caution. State expense? Kind of like the state expense for security upgrades to his private residence while the state still has to keep up the actual governor's mansion? I have no idea what that costs, do you? Probably not, because KASICH REFUSES TO RELEASE ANY INFORMATION. Pesky transparency.

And I understand the symbolism of the $1 salary - I don't have a beef with that. Bill Gatges, Mayor Bloomberg, wealthy individuals who work in public and private sector often forgo large paychecks in a symbolic gesture to prove they believe in what they're working for rather than just a paycheck. My point, and let me try to spell it clearly since hypocrisy and irony while native tongue to the Republican party you're still clueless about:

Kasich justifies a 128% increase in personal staff salaries by saying we need to pay more than the private sector to get good people - you get what you pay for basically. Then, if a SPECIAL ASSISTANT to the governor (new position, growing government) makes MORE THAN THE FREAKIN' GOVERNOR HIMSELF that must be some talented former Lehman brothers officemate! Holy smokes this guy's talent must be on the genius end. Glad he's here to help. If we are gauging talent by how much we pay people, what are we getting for $1?

  7. During the campaign the Republican Governor's Association made a big deal about the fact the rebate work for the cash-for-appliance-clunkers was outsourced to a firm in Texas who then outsourced it internationally.

This was done without Ted Strickland's knowledge and was in direct violation of state laws and regulations. The individuals reponsible for it were fired or resigned.

That was a small financial program.

Now an ENTIRE DEPARTMENT that is responsible for bringing, cultivating, and keeping business here in Ohio is being outsourced to California.

    And you're celebrating this decision.

You're high-fiving each other for something on a much larger scale that will impact our entire state, not the few people who bought appliances, but the entire state for years to come that you all tried to burn Strickland for.

    Hypocrites.

  8. The plunder twin brothers, while taking time out from criticizing Republicans, are shocked...shocked... to discover that somebody else might criticize Democrats.

LOLS! Go back to your playground and sulk, and wonder aloud to each other why you can't convince everyone else to make themselves as mad as you. You're just mad that you lost and you'll take any opportunity to point and jump up and down screaming like the monkey on the basket in Raiders, demanding that we answer you.

Why don't you do your own research on that question -- because you seem to be the only one interested in trying to evaluate a team's job performance BEFORE their first day at work. Credible concern or objection? I think not! LOL

  10. Outraged, I'm telling you...I'm outraged.

    I'm outraged about being outraged.

  11. And the guys admits in the WaPo article he has no experience making pubic policy... who Kasich made in charge of setting Ohio's economic development public policy.

Not often you see someone brag about a venture capitalist's background by writing solely about what companies he worked for.

You forgot the one that sold phony car phones for yuppies in the 1980s.

Yep, John Kasich gave a Cabinet position to a venture capitalist who's biggest claim to fame has nothing to do with anything he's actually done... as a venture capitalist.

Wonder what you guys would have said if Strickland had appointed a maxed out donor to a Cabinet agency...

Ohio's unemployment rate isn't higher than when Strickand came into office because of what Strickland or the Department of Development did or didn't do. That's just nonsense.

The fact of the matter is that Ohio's unemployment rate was above the national rate and now it's not. And it's been trending down most of last year.

What do you call it when you hire your unquaified friends and major political donors? Cronyism, I believe is the word.

And you guys celebrate it as a "new way."

  12. "because you seem to be the only one interested in trying to evaluate a team's job performance BEFORE their first day at work."

Uh, isn't the entire point of Keeling's post here how great of a job this guy will do BEFORE HE DOES HIS JOB?

Now that we're on a new timeclock with the Governor's election earlier this morning, let me get the rules straight:

    1. Republicans can slam Democrats for outsourcing an initiative but Democrats cannot criticize Republicans for outsourcing an entire department.

    2. Republicans can praise a Republican's job well done before he or she actually does the job but Democrats cannot criticize the same Republican.

    3. Republicans can award high campaign donors with cabinet posts and high paying jobs but when Democrats do it it's cronyism.

    4. Republicans can increase the state government by (at latest count) 4 positions and salaries by 128% but when Democrats actually decrease government spending, cut budgets, and limit hiring it's called "tax and spend."

    Did I get it right?

But feel free to completely ignore any of the points made proved by facts - you know you will anyway.
