Let's just give $2500 annually to the uninsured so they can buy their own health care.Maybe a voucher could work. I dunno.
Assuming a population of 30 million uninsured citizens (I'm throwing out the illegal aliens whch inflate the number of uninsured to over 40 million), the annual cost of this "plan" is $75 billion - which is far less than Obama's plan. Plus, this allows everyone to select the free-market insurance company and health care provider of their choice.
I'm no big fan of welfare handouts and I don't think that health care is a 'right", but this idea is cheaper and better than a 1,000 page overhaul of a system that works for most Americans.
It would be interesting to know also, if you gave $2500 in unrestricted cash to the 30 million uninsured, how many would actually use it to buy insurance?
Obviously, this is pretty much impossible to implement, but it does a great job of highlighting the deficiencies in Obama's plan.

Milton Friedman advocated a negative income tax at the low ends. It's certainly better than the bureaucracy, however he didn't advocate earmarking funds for certain purposes though.
ReplyDeletePart of that is because he believed in freedom of the individual. But thinking about HC, a subsidy for individuals would only further distort the market and exacerbate the legitimate issue of HC inflation. We'd then find ourselves with even more folks who struggle to pay HC bills, the "free market" would be blamed, and someone would propose that more government would have to "fix" it.

Here's an idea - a refundable tax credit. A tax credit toward health care if you can prove you have health insurance - private or through your employer.
ReplyDeleteIf it were paired with a Health Savings Account, you could save health dollars over the course of a lifetime.
Say for a young, healthy single person, a $300 refundable tax credit. That person could save that money until they need it. (A person will spend 80% of the money they will ever spend on health care in the last two years of their life.)
The dollar amount could go up for families, existing illnesses, whatnot.
But if you can't prove you have health insurance - the money is refunded to the gov't.
Responsible people can save for their future health care spending, and insurers can offset the cost of the sick without a mandate.

ReplyDeleteThese politicians voted Against the Nathan Deal Amendment, that would Prevent Health Care Benefits to Illegal Aliens. Simply put--it's not their BLOODY MONEY! So what! Do they care if taxpayers have to foot the behemoth bill, for anybody who snubs our laws and enters a sovereign country called America? The nationwide parasites are --CHEAP LABOR--businesses who could care less, because they pile up enormous profits. The corporate hierarchy have been having a field day--FOR DECADES. A foreign national gets hurt, their service manager or whoever the underling is, drives the maimed person and relinquishes any responsibility by dumping them on the emergency hospital entranceway. BINGO! nothing to pay!
ReplyDeletePerhaps Americans should find some old shoddy clothes, no shave, no haircut and enter every emergency room in our country in the millions? Speak a lot of gibberish and carry no identification with a small splinter in their finger, a touch of a fever or any minor condition. By federal law the hospital will have an emergency on a--EMERGENCY. I am afraid Americans have been Lemmings going over a proverbial cliff, since who knows when? We just keep paying and paying even more to the IRS, to support--ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Try getting free health care in any other country, other than societies in the European Union? A FAT CHANCE!
